I can relate firsthand to what it feels like to struggle with reading. Growing up, reading for me was tough. I was always playing catch up and always felt behind. Not to mention terrified to read in front of my peers. Learning to read does not come easy to everyone and it takes time, patience, hard work and correct instruction. Reading is best learned in a systematic approach where certain skills build upon one another. Using stress free diagnostics, we can see specifically where your child needs to grow and develop a plan tailored to their exact reading needs. Whether it’s accuracy, fluency, comprehension. . . together we can improve your child’s reading. If a learning disability such as dyslexia is a concern or you child is on an IEP, we can easily structure our sessions and work to meet your child’s needs and goals. We have many years of experience working with students that have reading deficits and have found that the best results come from very specific instruction customized to each kiddo. In addition to helping your child become an accurate and fluent reader, having your child develop a love and enjoyment of reading is the ultimate goal! We can do this together while teaching them the necessary skills and techniques to be successful.

We firmly believe the most crucial component to math success is confidence. Being willing to try, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes is a just as much a skill as leaning to add or multiply. During our math sessions we will focus on fostering a growth mindset and self-advocacy as we specifically tailor math instruction to your child’s exact skill deficits. We will use stress free diagnostics to screen and find where the holes in math are, then create a plan to be most effective with our sessions. To accompany our time together, we will provide relevant and manageable at home assignments to correlate with our sessions and school. We are familiar with many different and current curriculums and can work with you and your child’s teacher to help as needed. We love to teach math, boost confidence and as a team we can definitely help you child become a successful mathematician.
Additionally, students today are not learning math the way we did. It’s different and we’ve seen the frustration that comes with this new style of instruction. Kids who struggle with math often battle with parents because how parents explain is different from what’s in school. This causes stress for everyone and makes helping often feel counterproductive. The good news is we can help. No matter where your kiddo is in math we can bridge the gap between the new and older methods as we focus on the skills your child needs to become more successful and confident in math. In truth, the newer an older methods really aren’t that far off and often some simple explaining clears the air. We’re happy to sit down with you and your child to work through things as needed to get everyone on the same page and moving in the right direction.

Writing can be tough. No other real way to say it. Writing can often be the most difficult subject for kids in school and school today demands a lot of writing. In my years of teaching we have developed many strategies to help kids get over the hump when it comes to writing. Much of the time just getting started is the hardest part. During our tutoring sessions, we will work on techniques for getting started, creating outlines/graphic organizers, writing well written organized work and emphasizing spelling, punctuation and complete sentences. Also, in school today much of student writing is on an iPad or some type of technology. We will teach your child several strategies to help make the technology work in their favor. This is especially true for kiddos with learning disabilities. We love to write, teach writing and I look forward to the opportunity of helping your child become a successful and confident writer.

Is your child looking for a challenge academically? Do you feel like school isn’t giving them enough or providing adequate material to meet their full potential? I’d love to help out and together we can work on a plan to take things to the next level. Often times schools can just provide “extra work” for students who excel academically. This just doesn’t engage or motivate kids to push their thinking. With me, I will focus on the “4 C’s” Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. Taking the 4 C’s and customizing them into a plan where your child excels really allows for growth, engagement and real world experiences. I welcome the challenge of providing instruction, activities and ideas for in and out of school to help your child really excel in any area.
